New kitchen cabinets can freshen up a tired and dated looking kitchen, making it appear brighter, cleaner, and brand new. But getting all new cabinets can be a costly renovation. If you want the look of new kitchen cabinets but don’t have the inclination or the budget, then refacing and refinishing are two great options for you to consider.
Cabinet Refacing and Cabinet Refinishing allow you to dramatically change the look of your cabinetry without having to tear the existing cabinets out.
Refacing means that the doors and side panels of your cabinets and the fronts of your cabinet drawers are replaced but you keep the cabinet boxes and drawer mechanisms. In order to make sure that everything matches, you can also change the mouldings and face frames.
Refacing takes about two to three weeks to complete and will save you approximately 25% to 50% compared to the cost of getting all new custom cabinets.
With refinishing, you keep your existing cabinets – doors and all – but they are sanded or chemically stripped, and a new colour or finish is applied. It is important to note that this option will only work if you have wood cabinets. Cabinets that are made from laminate or thermo foil would only become damaged with this process.
As long as there is nothing structurally wrong with your cabinets, both refacing and refinishing are viable alternatives to replacing them outright. But whether you choose refacing or refinishing will depend on a number of factors.
As mentioned, unless you have wood cabinets, refacing is your only feasible option if you do not wish to outright replace your cabinets.
If you do have wood cabinets, then you have a choice between refacing and refinishing. If budget is your main concern, then refinishing will always be your least expensive option. Refinishing makes sense, especially if you love the current design of your cabinets but are just looking to have a fresher appearance. This option will give you unlimited choices in paint colours or stains.
Refacing, on the other hand, will give you more style options. If you truly don’t like the style of your cabinet doors, you likely won’t be happy with simply having them refinished. Or if you are planning on adding additional cabinets – like in a kitchen island – then it makes more sense to reface in order to ensure that everything matches.
