Your kitchen is easily the heart of your Oakville home: your family cooks there, eats there and gathers to talk about their days. The kitchen is used every day, so it’s important that the kitchen functions as you need it to and provides you with the space you need. Since it gets so much use, it’s often one of the rooms in the house that needs to be kept up to date and is frequently renovated.

Redecorating and renovating all the time can become very expensive, so an option to give yourself a new kitchen without the hefty price tag is fantastic. One such option is cabinet refacing, and since cabinets are the biggest part of your kitchen, refacing them can make the space look completely new.

What is cabinet refacing?

Refacing your cabinets means to replace the “face” of your cabinet. This can be the existing door fronts or hardware, or both. Your cabinets will look like brand new ones have been installed when really, it’s your old cabinet boxes with a new look.

How does the process work?

The company you hire to complete this process will come in and remove the doors, drawers, hardware and all the hinges. Next, the cabinet boxes’ front portions will be covered with a type of natural veneer – usually, the finish will match the final look you want to see. After that, the cabinet sides will be skinned with veneer or laminate.

Once the finish has been updated, the new hinges will be installed. If the old hinges are in good condition, you may use the old ones to save some cost. The new drawers and door fronts will be installed, including drawer pulls and handles. If you have any additional décor – like crown moulding or specialty panels in your cabinet doors – they will be installed as the final step.

How long does it take?

When you hire a cabinet contractor in Oakville to reface your kitchen cabinets, the entire process can be completed in about 3 days.

Can any cabinet be refaced?

No. For a cabinet to be a candidate for refacing, the cabinet’s condition needs to be in good shape without too much damage to it. Further, if the cabinets initially installed were cheap material or weren’t installed properly, you might not be able to reface them without damaging the structure. When you have a consultation done for the process, the technician will inspect the cabinets to determine if refacing can be done.

How much does Cabinet Refacing cost?

The cost, like almost any other renovation for your home, will vary. This price tag will start at about $1,000 and go up to $3,000 for laminate veneers or $6,000 for wood veneers. If you have a large kitchen, it can be almost $10,000 to reface the cabinets. To compare this with just buying brand new cabinets, stock cabinets could be installed for about $5,000, although if you’re looking for something custom, you could be looking upwards of $20,000. So if your kitchen is already custom due to size or space requirements, then refacing can be a much less expensive option than purchasing brand new custom cabinets.
